For over twenty years, my employment was in various positions in the educational arena, and as a result, I have learned to grow and adapt as conditions require this adjustment. My career allowed me to work as a teacher in traditional educational settings, special educational classrooms, “at-risk” academic venues, Juvenile Hall Institutional programs, and Independent School situations. My experiences included kindergarten through High School and covered various academic subjects.
I spent a year as a Resource Teacher assisting a school to identify elementary students with behavioral problems, pervasive tardiness, or issues of extreme absences. In this position, I met with the parents at school or in their homes to develop a plan to resolve the concern. I worked with the school principal and the teacher to get direct input and their perspective on the problem and areas needing improvement.
As a Coordinator for the County Office of Education for five years, I directed and implemented a national program called Project Snap, funded by the Mott Foundation. The program design was to generate school and community interest within the neighborhood school. The school organized committees of school staff members and interested community members to construct programs and services to improve the educational conditions and structure in the school community.
My Juvenile Hall experience challenged me to find a new way to ignite and engage my students in learning. Many of them had very negative opinions about the entire “schooling notion” from their observations. Their frustrations inspired me to devise a new method to gain their excitement in education. I began writing inspirational poetry and reading these poems in class and affirmations they recited daily.
